Faced with a spurt in fatal accidents involving two wheeler riders, the Tamil Nadu Government has made helmets mandatory. It took hundreds of awareness rallies, appeals from the traffic police and a public interest litigation to persuade the government to bring back the compulsory helmet rule. Two-wheeler riders account for a majority of fatal accidents in the country with most of the victims below 40 years succumbing to head injuries.
